So, this movie takes place near the Pennsylvania / West Virginia border. It tells the stories of a few people in a small town there. It's a bit of a sprawling movie-- the action takes place over the course of decades, and there is a large cast of characters.

I think what they were going for with this one is a kind of backwoods noir story. Everything is dark and gritty, everyone sucks, nobody is a good person, etc. etc. But it just doesn't come together into anything coherent the way a classic noir story should. I think part of the problem is that there isn't really a traditional hero character. It's kind of similar to No Country for Old Men in that nobody is particularly heroic. So you're just kind of watching events unfold. That might be ok, except that it really feels like the author hates all these characters. Here's another dumb hick, ha ha!

The author seems to particularly hate Christians-- they're all evil sociopaths, every one. And they apparently sacrifice animals, and believe that they can personally resurrect people, since that is totally a real thing that Christians really do, in the real world.

I could go on, but basically... yeah, this is bad. It's just not fun to watch. Avoid.
