I don't know why the first one didn't grab me. But this one is fine. I've played so many games where I make the D&D characters and make six of them before starting, I was fine with just seeing what happened with this one. I did not use any of the companions in any of the Baldur's Gate games, so I am happy to do so here. (I am not sure if we get a choice?)
The initial problem we're asked to solve - I guess kill the giant from Queen's News of the World? Isn't interesting, but within a few minutes we're on a ship that a pirate is trying to board. And then the ship crashes and now we have a good problem to solve so I am engaged in this. It certainly looks nice, like how a Baldur's Gate II might look if they made it now.
Ah crap, I thought I had taken a screenshot of them fighting, but the only picture I have is those two hanging out on the beach. This is pretty early in the game but so far so good.
