The game chugs along and is fun with a good feedback gameplay loop - but when you decide to do "The Truth" campaign/life goal things come to a sudden jarring screeching derailment.
The Blue Kingdom accurately simulates that waiting room from Beetlejuice - the bureaucracy of the underworld. But this is not a compliment! This is not fun gameplay! I found myself simply not giving a fuck about all the esoteric and pretentious customs of this bizarre world and simply skipping walls of text because I just wanted to get THE FUCK THROUGH it. In addition to this, there's a huge tax for leaving the Blue Kingdom to get back to the rest of the game if you are getting tired of all this bullshit - in the Blue Kingdom you have to change your status to "Dead" or some variant thereof to get anywhere with anybody. To exit the Blue Kingdom you have to prove you're -not- dead. They also don't sell supplies but only the food of the dead, which is fine, except there's a "You ate the food of the dead" tax you have to pay to leave, and it's all in the dumbass esoteric currencies of the game rather than coin so if you spend too long in the Blue Kingdom you can basically fuck yourself and have to suicide to get out again.
Unfortunately, like I said above, the Truth campaign/life goal - a good chunk of it takes place in The Blue Kingdom. Just fucking terrible game design. |
