It's called the bathroom break. Freaking Seven Samurai was shorter and it at least had an intermission.
Also remember that this movie is directed by the guy who made "Bad Taste" and "Dead Alive." Live action cartoons full of chainsaws, vomit, and lawnmowers. Damn straight Gimli's gonna whack several orcs in the crotch. Knowing his record, I found his restraint exceptional. Not to mention that the whole tone of the movie is so wrist-slittingly depressing that you fucking NEED comic relief to carry you through the quarter of a day it takes to watch.
My one complaint about the film is that it uses that goddamn "GET THE CAMERA IN CLOSE AND SHAKE IT AROUND TO MAKE THE FIGHT SCENES LOOK LIKE THEY'RE GOING ON IN A PAINT MIXER" technique that's come so into vouge in recent action movies. Is it asking too much to be able to actually tell who's hitting who and what the hell's going on?
Also, arbitrary bitterness aside, GOAT BLESS THESE FUCKING FILMS!!! After watching George Lucas defacate over one of my favorite childhood memories these films have been a breath of fresh air. I care about the characters, I cheer when the cavalry shows up, I'm never tormented by gut-wrenching stupidity, and I've finally watched a movie with CGI that doesn't bug the living fuck out of me. I'll take Liv Tyler over Jar Jar any day of the week. I could spend hours going over the sheer awfulness of the Star Wars prequels, most of the time the complaints I hear over LOTR is piddly shit like, "There were not that many elves at the battle of helm's deep and they got the architecture all wrong." Shaddup, you overly sensitive anal-retentive ballerina princesses. I am SUCH a whore for these films.
