| Home for the holidays with the folks I've been sampling their 1000000+ satelite direct ultra OOTM TeeVee. I have just seen the stupidest goddamn thing I have ever watched in the history of stupid TV. Animal Planet just showed something called "The Future is Wild" that they've been advertising the living hell out of for the last week that's supposed to be about animal species that will evolve 200 million years in the future.
A quick bit of background: I am a genetics/molecular biology major and this was the biggest pile of bullshit I have ever seen. You can't predict how evolution is going to proceed. There is no natural force that's going to inevitably lead humans towards losing their pinky finger, becoming super strong, and developing giant throbbing brains inevitably. Natural Selection is just "What works." For all we know our descendents might be submoronic hermaphroditic cave dwellers that adapted to catastrophic environmental collapse. What would have been cool is if the show talked about current evolutionary pressures that are affecting species and what kind of cool new traits they might develop to adapt. Instead we got something so unbelievably stupid I just watched mouth agape in shock. Have a look at their page about the "science" behind the show "But even with this fund of knowledge, we have to accept that our predictions, though rooted in science, will necessarily contain some conjecture. " Holy understatement of the fucking century, Batman! The show features bioluminescent sharks called "Sharkopaths," flying fish called "Flish," and giant landbound squids that can knock a tree down with a flick of its tentacle called "MegaSquids" locked in a vicious battle for supremacy against monkey squids called "Squibbons." There's no scientific validity behind this show. They were just pulling shit out of their asses and asking scientists what kind of things would be necessary to make this kind of shit possible. Fucking sweeps week bullshit. The worst part is, this is supposed to be one of the discovery channel spinoffs. People watch this bullshit and think it's educational. And every five minutes into the movie they say that "scientists" believe all this horseshit or say that they consulted with "experts" on the biology oif the giant MegaSquid. Where the fuck do you find MegaSquid experts? Drunk in the alleyway? Carl Sagan's rolling in his grave tonight. People are going to walk away and believe that this is totally true because "scientists" said so. Let me just say for the record that I fucking HATE anytime that any process that does not involve the scientific method is called a science. With this shit bookended by "The Pet Psychic" is it any wonder we're a country of drooling morons who haven't the slightest idea how the technology our lives revolve around actually work? It pisses me off how the media treats science like its fucking magic and treats moronically cobled together pseudoscience as equally valid. Science is nothing more than the record of stuff we're reasonably certain we can prove. That's it. The reason it's gotten so complex is that the universe's proven to be so complex. I've gotta track down the Michael Critons of the world and kick their collective asses. |
