It's not the complete elimination of work, it's the reduction in effort needed. by Fullofkittens 12/30/2020, 6:43am PST
Examples of "manual labor jobs" that will probably disappear by 2040:
- drivers of things that go to a predictable place (cabs, buses, long haul trucks). There are over a half million long haul truckers in the US alone and none of them are needed. You just need somebody to maintain the trucks and keep them on the road. The existence of Uber and Lyft drivers is a temporary bandaid for a tech debt issue: communities haven't yet adequately accommodated self-driving cars and the driving tech isn't quite there yet.
- people physically working in places like gas stations. (Will gas stations even exist in 2040? Hopefully not!) Charging stations do not typically have a human babysitter. They need somebody to monitor and maintain them but that's way fewer people.
- the number of people needed in fast food and service industries will be greatly reduced when self-serve ordering online becomes the norm. McDonald's is already trying to get you to stop using humans in this process. The making of a Big Mac is not skilled work; it can clearly be replaced with an automaton (and probably has a greater chance of getting your order right): all you need is someone to clean and stock the machines. The only reason this hasn't been done already is that our society devalues the lives of the people in those jobs to the point that it's cheaper to employ them than it would be to build a slightly less cheap robot to replace them.
- I personally am quite skeptical that grocery stores are needed. I haven't set foot in one since March 13th, 2020, nor has anyone in my family. We order our groceries online and it appears on our doorstep. Currently, that process involves multiple humans (tech debt issue). You need people monitoring and maintaining those processes but not only is there no need for anyone "stocking shelves"...you don't even need the shelves!
- Garbage pickup...
- Mail delivery...

...the list goes on and on. Mike Rowe keeps on telling people to remember to consider a skilled trade rather than getting a Music Theory degree, which is smart but I would tell today's high school graduates to go to a community college program in robotics and be one of the workers in 2030 replacing a few hundred workers from 2020. And I would tell people in those industries to do the same thing: if you're driving a garbage truck today, I'd think about getting one of those robotics certificates in the next ten years. But there will not be enough of those jobs to go around.
