I thought it was a great movie.
Usual disclosures: I haven't read/am not planning on reading/make fun of people who have read any of Tolkien's overlong and overimportant tomes. I once struggled through the first chapter of "Dune." Does that count?
The books seem to be ruining the movies for a lot of people. Luckily, Peter Jackson isn't letting them stand in his way; he's got a job to do, and he's just telling a good story. For example. we don't need to see Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn sitting around a campfire eating a rabbit with six legs and tusks coming out of its mouth to know they've been tracking the orcs for a while. A few ellipses here and there are fine, and necessary.
As I'm better than all of you who have read the book, I can only approach the movie as it stands. The story moves briskly. The important plot points are easily followed. The pace is varied enough to make sitting through the seemingly interminable elf recap a mere rest-stop en route to the next battle scene. The battle scenes, for their part, are well-directed and the shift in tides of the long battle at Helm's Deep are clear. Jackson has become more adept at foreshadowing. Where the first LotR movie was rather clumsy in its attempts to lay out important plot points in advance ("we should go in the mines" "but the mines are dangerous!" "shit, we can't go in the snow anymore, we'd better head down to the mines." "Did I mention the mines are dangerous?"), Two Towers seems more natural.
Finally, no one's mentioned the very best thing about Two Towers, which is the Gollum. As a technical achievement, it's lightyears ahead of anything anyone else has done. Beyond that, it's a great character, three-dimensional in every sense of the phrase. Kudos to Andy Serkis and Weta - they've set the standard for all CG creatures from this point forward. Speaking of which, the Gollum is everything Jar-Jar Binks should have been:
1. It looks great. There were only a few times where the integration with the practical elements in a scene weren't spot on, but these were fleeting
2. It had real emotional depth.
3. It wasn't in the Star Wars movies (ha ha, get it? Because Jar-Jar shouldn't have been in the... fuck off, fags) |
