| My wife got her first stab (also Pfizer) two days before me, and I asked her how it went. She said "it was basically like getting an oil change."
I assumed that she was being metaphorical. It turned out that my county's main hospital - which is coordinating a giant vaccination operation - has taken over an abandoned Sears and at your appointment time, you drive up to the place where Sears used to do auto maintenance. They wave you in to the garage, a lady takes your ID, hands you a vaccination card, the car in front of you pulls out, you drive forward ten feet, a nurse sticks the vaccine in your arm through your driver's side window and then they tell you to pull forward. "We want you to stay here for 15 minutes, is that alright?" "Yeah, sure." So I pull forward, I get waved into a lane, and suddenly I am stuck in a sea of cars. Nothing is moving. I'm sitting there listening to a podcast, no big deal, I'm thinking shit, by the time I get out of this traffic jam my 15 minutes will be up. And yeah, I never need to wait because I didn't make it out of the crush of cars for fifteen minutes anyway, so then I drive home. My wife says "it's kind of cool how they've got that queueing system where they put you in a line of cars and release them every fifteen minutes" and I did not realize this, because I am a fucking moron. Our dude President Joe Biden is not the kind of guy who likes to take a victory lap, Sad Humble Grandpa is more his brand, but let's be real: if the election had gone another way I would not have gotten a vaccine through my driver's side window in the oil change place in a former Sears two weeks ago. I'd still be wondering if I'd ever get vaccinated, the former administration did not give a shit. |
