Forum Overview :: What Are You Playing Right Now?

Well, there's a web site, for the airing of grievances. But every day is Festivus here at Caltrops, so here goes.

The first thing to know is that it was a Kickstarter game that overpromised and under-delivered, and broke a bunch of promises along the way. (Don't they all?) The second thing to know is that a lot of people loved the pixel art style in the original Mega Man, and hated the 3D art in No. 9. You've played a lot of indies, so you're probably used to the "PS1 game that teleported 20 years into the future" aesthetic. I don't think most gamers are. They're used to 2020s AAA games which have actual art teams and stuff. I'm sure the contrast between the Kickstarter bullshots and the reality was a pretty rude awakening for a lot of people.

...I don't get the hate. I mean, like Yooka-Laylee it's a solid 7/10, possibly an 8. Not the absolute kusogame it's made out to be. You've just gotta lean heavily on the dash. It's ball-bustingly hard at points, but no worse than Mega Man 1.

Is this a gamergate thing?

Well, you played it, I didn't. Is it a consistent difficulty or are there weird difficulty spikes? A lot of crappy platformer levels I've played seem to go from 0 to impossible really quickly. The more I learn about level design, the more respect I have for games that succeed in hitting a consistent difficulty.

Anyway, Mighty No. 9 apparently had a very tone-deaf PR team, or something. The infamous quote about making enemies "cry like an anime fan on prom night" seems almost designed to get their userbase angry. I think there was some social justice stuff too. I don't remember and I don't care to look it up.

Once the negativity train starts rolling on a game it quickly becomes more fun to just hop on than to analyze it objectively. Like the Atari E.T. game isn't even that bad, IF YOU READ THE MANUAL, but it's more fun to watch a youtuber performatively shit on it than to think about that fact too much. In a way, boring games are worse than extremely shitty games.
