Really enjoying the beta test for this game released exactly three years ago by Roop 05/17/2021, 2:51pm PDT
They've already announced State of Decay 3, but this beta test is for State of Decay 2, steam exclusive though. I've only been playing the last year, and the way they update this thing reminds me more of an MMO. They have monthly patches, artists adding new items into the bounty broker that cycle in and out, and usually other improvements that would always bring me back. They started adding difficulty levels, and then the ability to customize them, another time a guy went through and improved the driving model for all the vehicles. That was a fun patch, and I think State of Decay 2 gave me the skills to tolerate Cyberpunk's driving model. I'd just use my handbrake constantly to have controlled skids everywhere, and I guess swinging around into zombie hordes made me good at skidding out of the path of lines of Cyberpunk civilians.

Anyway sometimes they'd do things that may as well break the game, if it were an MMO. The (free) dlc stuff, especially, fireworks and the Pyrolauncher. The Daybreak stuff for your base not to mention recruitable mercenary soldiers, all of it so overpowered. At the same time you can always just jack up the difficulty level so it all works, so they let me balance it. Myself, I don't use the pyrolauncher. Or I like recruiting the awful survivors to handicap my community in fun ways. There's this community of three incompetants that can spawn, always begging you for food, and I always try and recruit them all with my band of mercenaries

So this patch, it needs a beta because it changes so many gameplay elements, in ways making it harder and easier. It's probably features that were always on a wishlist, just deepening the gameplay loop. You start with three survivors and pick a base, recruit a few other survivors you find across the map and pick a leader, establish a base so you can get strong enough to defeat the plague hearts scattered across the map. Finish you leader's questline, and you win (or keep the community and switch maps). In the beta, now the plague hearts create zones of control so you can't just move into any base or create any outpost unless you kill it. I like it, makes me choose a base I might not have, and the new upgradable outposts changes my strategy, now there's a lot more interesting options I'm still thinking about. I guess that's why this game always pulls me back. That and the way the zombie heads squish when you stomp them.

I like this guy's channel, he posts strategy guides and summarizes the dev livestreams.
