You send out probes to uncover planets, then choose what type of colony to build on the planets, then build space lanes between planets with complimentary inputs and outputs. As a planet's inputs and outputs are met, it produces more money for more colonies.
As you tech up, you unlock new colony types, space stations for fine-tuning resource inputs and outputs, and new types of space lanes. You can also unlock a tech to go all Vogon and destroy an inconvenient planet to make way for an intergalactic space highway.
