I got a letter today from a shit job I haven't worked at in over a decade. Silly me, I thought maybe there was a class-action lawsuit and I was getting a check or something. Nope!
"Oopsy-whoopsie! We got hacked. Now whoeverthefuck has your social security number and all your other sensitive info. But don't worry, we got you 12 free months of some bullshit Equifax service!"
Looks like it's time to do a credit freeze through no fault of my own!
Most companies absolutely do not take security seriously. It's insane, but for them it's just checking boxes to meet some annoying requirement. Our dumb partners or our irritating oversight organization *eye roll*. Oops then something happens. Then their comically ill-conceived response plan LEAPS INTO ACTION and they do stupid shit like try to restore from a backup while the systems are still compromised and huh that's weird the backups are deleted now. (That last part didn't happen to anyone I know, it's a story my consultant brother told me.) |
