That said, I came away from it wondering how someone who hadn't read the books would be able to follow the plot, so much gets glossed over so fast.
With what was presented in the movie, the plot so far wasn't hard to follow (if that's what you meant). I get who is who and what's going on, I just felt like the movie didn't give me much of a reason to care. Paul, to me, was a plank of wood with hallucinations. His dad is fairy-tale good and Baron Harkonnen fairy-tale evil as far as personalities so it's easy to know who I'm supposed to root for, but take a step back and what I ultimately see is two rich families fighting over an exploitable resource on another planet. If Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson started lobbing missiles at each other, sure it would be newsworthy but I don't really care if two billionaires kill each other. I'd be more invested in the people who are the collateral damage around them, which is probably why I liked Javier Bardem's scene the most out of everything.
If you were part of the sandpeople, what really happened in the movie? One group of rich assholes gets replaced by what you presume to be another group of rich assholes. Duke Atreides is portrayed as a nice, humble guy, but he doesn't do anything for the natives before he dies, so whether or not he lives is a wash. Then the previous rich assholes resume control of the land. From the standpoint of the natives, nothing changed and nothing was lost.
Outside of Paul and his mom, who cares if his dad dies? What are the consequences, did the movie say? Does his home planet collapse into disarray? Did their entire society transfer to Arrakis and then get wiped out in the Harkonnen invasion? Is there some massive ripple effect across the galaxy?
This is why I was ultimately bored and didn't feel like I had a reason to care. I didn't even realize this was only part one until I saw it in the title screen, so I get two and a half hours of setup with no payoff involving events I'm not invested in. Maybe once the 2nd half is filmed and released in several years the whole story will come together in a satisfying way for me. I imagine if you already know the complete story and how all the dots connect then this could be a good adaptation so far.
As an aside, the tech explanations help. There wasn't anything mentioned about lasers causing nuclear explosions if they touch a shield, and I didn't realize the dart was some kind of tiny drone. I understood from the sparring scene between Paul and Josh Brolin that slow-moving attacks could get through the shield so I thought I understood why they were using swords. But then I see lasers and what I thought was a futuristic blow dart and suddenly none of it made any sense. |
