It's interesting to read the dawn of cyberpunk and it remains an interesting setting, but it reads fairly sophomoric. Not very far above all those old D&D novels I was into during grade school but are embarrassing now.
The street samurai chick boning the computer nerd was especially self insert cringey.
Currently I'm reading through Snow Crash for the first time and am having a similar reaction. It's interesting reading all the gig economy predictions made in 1992, pre-Amazon, but the writing skill itself falls short. It's like he's trying to be twice as outrageous as Verhoeven satire but with half the wit. |
