I spent most of my time exploring the area around the first town. I had two player characters at this point (NPCs become fully-controllable PCs when they respond favorably to the >join command). I got into a situation where I had one gold piece because you lose gold when you run from fights. I didn't know where I was. I was lost.

The G command tells you what map you are on. Note - I did have to buy the hint guide. And I love it, it may be on sale right now. It's worth it. As a GAMER UNCLE, I don't have time or desire to map with grid paper, so this helps me out a ton.

I was able to find the map I was on in the hint book and I was able to navigate out. I asked some guys on the Nox discord for early game help and they said that if I can make it back to the starting town, there are some easy enemies I can use to level up. I did so!

I also found an orc's lair. My original playthrough, I went into the orc's lair and then went back up the stairs. After restoring from a save game, I went back in and found a third (N)PC to join me. Having more character is helpful because it spreads out the attacks of enemies. I thought I was in Bayport, but I was not - I was in Ghrodwir. I got out of there and started beating up enemies pretty well.

My first two characters got to level 2 and I realized my fighter character was using her bare hands. Argh, violence! I had acquired a +1 sword sword, so she is using that now. A group of enemies I could not beat started trying to kill me on the world map so I traveled to Bayport. Map (from the hint book) in hand, I went to an armory. I have 65 gold pieces and I want to improve the equipment of my team.

Getting to the armory had me encounter a third named Blade! Who joined! They are real liberal on the >join command. I remember wishing ruefully that Dupre would join me in Exodus: Ultima III. Well, in this game it's not that tough to add characters, honestly.

I got to the armory and it's 3:28PM. The merchant there is SLEEPING. Don't get me wrong, I'd sleep every day at 3:28PM if I could as well. So my current quest is "when is this guy going to wake up?"

This is so clearly the most amazing game of the decade if you grew up on the Ultimas and want to relive that. I mean, they could screw it all up in the end game, but this is a world that lets you get lost in it and I am loving this thing.
