| Despite the title it's not a Dungeon Keeper clone. It's an FTL-style blobber roguelite where you play the boss monster of a dungeon, defending it against heroic incursions using a combination of traps and disposable minions to soften up invaders before finishing them off personally.
There's some humor to the game where between invasions your dungeon is run like a corporate franchise, but in a number of key gameplay ways it succeeds where other "play the bad guy" games fail. Iratus is the most obvious comparison. Where that game's lore made so much hay about how your undead minions are disposable and endless, in the actual gameplay getting a minion killed could be devastating, especially because grinding was not an option. In Legend of Keepers all your dead minions are resurrected automatically for free, they just have a morale meter that goes down every time they die and they go on strike for a few weeks if it reaches zero; but it goes back up if you rotate in occasional replacements. Heroes all come with a variety of skills and passives that you can (and should) check out carefully before populating the encounters they'll have to fight through to reach your boss room. The process of isolating weak points and taking apart their synergies reminds me a lot of the original FTL. The one thing that irks me is the strange choices for boss monster forms. Evil Centaur, Tree Witch, and Monkey Frankenstein? The DLC adds Hippo Mummy??? Anyhoo, recommended if on sale. It won't knock your socks off, but it's a podcast game par excellence. |
