This game is amazing! 2022 GOTY contender and I doubt it'll be surpassed.by Mischief Maker 03/06/2022, 9:10pm PST
Shadow Warrior 3 I was looking forward to for months but found the experience to be a B+ at best. Hero's Hour I bought on a whim the same day, only started playing seriously tonight and I've been grinning like an idiot ever since.
Obvious downsides first, the game looks and sounds ancient, about on par with the original King's Bounty in terms of aesthetics, to the point that I wonder if the non-city music is midi. (Fortunately the city music is in .ogg files so they can be replaced with the themes from HOMM3). Also it's a tad buggy, with music crapping out and the occasional CTD after extended play sessions (the game auto-saves so you can hop back in).
But the gameplay... it's like every good idea from every HOMM game and mod rolled into one, with 11 factions each hilariously cheesily broken in different ways. Heroes no longer get skills at random, instead having a skill tree you can traverse as you please.
But the one thing that was always a sticking point for me with King's Bounty and HOMM was the combat with abstract stacks of hundreds of units occupying a single hex. Not Hero's Hour! All the units are represented individually on the board in mass pausable real-time combat where you can direct flanking maneuvers and drag-n-drop spells. Your hero participates as a combatand themselves, and in my last game my main knight hero had a skill that made him absolutely gigantic on the battlefield and sending crowds of enemies flying with each strike like Sauron with his mace!
Even at full price this game is less than $20 and it's an absolute steal. Production values aside, I put this game right alongside AoW: Planetfall for the crown of greatest 4X. If you have the slightest interest in strategy gaming fucking buy this game right now!
