I love Adams' work, and I will not hear any criticism from fucking Rick and Morty snobs who note broad patterns in his writing and use that recognition of patterns as some kind of mark against the work.
I had an autographed Hitchhiker's Guide leather bound collection, but it somehow didn't make it from WI to CO when I moved. My brother has a funny story about getting that signature (he gave it to me as a gift).
I was surprised at how much behind-the-scenes research Adams actually did for some of his stuff. "Oolium" sounded like just the dumbest made-up name for a mineral, but later I learned it's actually in line with real mineral names. I think he was a terrific writer with some really amazing sci-fi ideas.
BUT. Let's consider that he hadn't yet decided whether his last unfinished book was going to be Dirk Gently or Hitchhiker's Guide. They're basically the same. My main criticism of him though is as script editor for Doctor Who. As a writer, pretty good. (Creature of the Pit notwithstanding. Ugh.) But as script editor, he made the series too silly. If the Doctor isn't going to take the absurd costumed monsters seriously, who will?
The opening to HHGTG is probably the most iconic and well-crafted moment in all of sci-fi comedy -- which admittedly sounds like Pete Davidson's "World's Smartest Horse" award, but still. Nobody will ever top that. |
