What's up with AVGN?

Currently, James does seemingly nothing for the episodes other than appear and read his lines. They're written, filmed, edited and uploaded by the Screenwave crew.

James' real passion have always been movies. He wanted to end AVGN long ago, multiple times. At one point when he was completely depressed and burnt out, but the Screenwave crew offered to take over a lot of responsibilities, which evolved into doing everything. Some interpret this, as a nice way of saying that they couldn't let James end their biggest money maker.

The old Cinemassacre crew all left for one reason or another, including Kyle, Bootsy, Kevin and Mike.

As far as we know, Earthbound was the last episode created by James himself (though he did have a bit larger involvement in 'Majora's Mask' and 'The Immortal' episodes). He was so inspired by the game, he found it in himself to create one more great episode. For all we know, it might happen again sometime.

What's up with James?

His main problem is lack of communications with the fans. Supposedly he's been working on a horror movie and his autobiography for a long time, but no concrete information has ever been released.

He has regularly complained about how parenting takes a lot of his time, leading to the 'no time' meme. In his playthrough of MegaMan X with Mike, he famously said how they need to finish at exactly 5:40, since he'll need to take care of the kids then. In his video about BluRay format, James said that being able to watch a full movie in one sitting 'is a luxury', sparking the discussion once more. In his Mortal Kombat (2021) review he said he watched the movie on mute with subtitles so as not to disturb his kids.

In 2021 James made a video addressing many of the criticisms voiced by our community, calling them 'comments of the asshole-ish kind'. In the video he showed his recording setup, including makeshift camera stand and lights on tripods zip tied to the ceiling. He also commented how it's all set up to let him sit down and record instantly, and how inconvenient it is to move it all for different camera angles. The video garnered some attention from various youtubers and our members, commenting on the inefficient and and amateurish setup, as well as his excuses as to why the recent episodes were 'basic'.

Mike Matei has left the show.
