Who the hell thought the best way to adapt HGTTG was by turning it into a manic-pixie-dreamgirl rom-com?

Arthur Dent is too boring for manic-pixie Trillian, who leaves the party with Zaphod instead, but Dent still gets the girl in the end by default because Zaphod turns out to be mega-hitler.

I suspect the reason they made Zaphod so much more stupid and evil is some kind of ham-fisted swipe at Bush jr's presidency.

Also why not just give Zaphod a single head in this adaptation? Why give him that disgusting neck-head, then add a boring unfunny scene where John Malkovich cuts it off?

I will at least give the film credit for excellent casting and a much more manic tone than the dry and lifeless 1980s BBC adaptation.

Ray was doing a bit and in it at the time he said that he had already seen HHGG and would see it again. There was something about that movie that hypnotized people, myself included. I liked it coming out of the theater. I suspect I might just like movie popcorn. This reviewer knew at the time and I have a memory of people being mean to him all over the internet, but while his post was a little harsh, he was mostly correct on all of it.

I started to watch it a couple of weeks ago because it is free on Amazon right now. The dolphin opener is excruciating. The opening scene with Ford and Arthur is great! They cut the piece where Prosser sits down in the mud, which was stupid to cut. They cut the "beware the leopard" line, which was stupid to cut. They made stupid decisions to cut things. But the scene itself was great in the movie, Mos Def and Martin Freeman were great together.

Then you get to Trillian OMG LETS MOVE TO MADAGASCAR, STRANGER which is stupid, and Rockwell's direction was terrible and there many other giant problems with the movie. It's forgettable in a vacuum and pretty bad at being the HHGG movie. All it needs to be is comedy bits strung together with a threadbare plot and they screwed it up.

They can do two heads now on a person with computer graphics. I wish they'd take another crack at a new HHGG film. The text game introduced the detail where, at the party where Trillian goes off with Zaphod (and I think there is a way to do that without making Trillian seem like a vapid bitch; the movie failed there) Zaphod had his second head covered in a bird cage with a covering at the costume party, and it would be nice to see that make it to a screen.
