Replaying Shadow Warrior 3. This game is criminally underrated. by MM 09/13/2022, 10:52pm PDT

On paper this game took only 6 hours to beat at release, but is that the true measure of a game's length since, as many reviews said and I agree, the first thing you want to do after beating the game is play it again?

Shadow Warrior 3 is the best game Flying Wild Hog ever made. It isn't the sprawling ambitious mess of Shadow Warrior 2, it's a tight and focused Doom Eternal-alike with some key gameplay improvements.

The big thing to understand about SW3 is weapon canceling. To the new player, it may seem that recovery and reloading animations take forever in this game. But what they don't realize is when you switch weapons the animations are canceled and the mag is full again. And sword strikes count and weapon switching.

The sword is now activated with a single right-click for a quick slash ala. Duke Nukem's mighty foot (once unlocked you can still hold the sword button down for charging super strikes). So while launching grenades from the launcher normally has a long reload and recovery time, if instead you pop off a grenade then immediately RMB-click for a sword swipe to cancel, you can double your damage output. Add in the earlygame upgrade where simply slashing an enemy with the sword will generate a tiny ammo pickup without needing a kill, and once you get the timing down you're a quad-shotgun blasting sword slashing cuisinart on legs cutting through enemy waves like butter.

And for arbitrary replay value, they've since patched in harder difficulties and a newgame+ mode.

I would recommend waiting for a sale, though.
