The recent rash of school shootings has caused a frenzy of blame, much of it falling upon the entertainment and gun industries. However, few news reports or editorials have mentioned a major catalyst in the rash of violence. They blame everything else in looking for answers, from the movies we watch to the video games we play, ignoring the largest cause of this type of brutality.
Every day thousands of undeserving kids are physically, verbally, and psychologically assaulted in school.
Sadly enough, these kids are often the best and brightest that our nation has to offer. The children that go on to become doctors, scientists, and programmers are usually the most tormented. Many parents and administrators downplay the severity of the abuse, forgetting what school was like when they were young. They gloss over their memories, often forgetting their own trauma or writing it off as teenage angst. Or they never experienced the type of torment that currently goes on in schools. Rock throwing, spitting, hitting or severe verbal abuse shouldn't be part of "kids being kids", as it is often excused.
Parents, when you go to work every day do you have to deal with abuse? No, you have a voice, you have options if you are abused in the workplace. You can quit and work elsewhere. You can go to your boss and complain. You can take legal action.
But what option do you have if you are a kid in a public school and no one listens?
Many teachers see this every day and do little to intervene. In many high schools, the teachers even buy into the hierarchy, protecting the popular and alienating the weak who can't protect themselves. Parents seldom hear about it out of embarrassment, and even then when many parents are told it often falls upon dead or skeptical ears. These kids are stranded, no one cares, no one is there to listen.
The purpose of [Jazz the Jackrabbit 2] is to give a voice to the thousands of kids that are abused every day, as well as drawing attention to the parents and administrators who ignore this abuse in the hope that something will be done. If [Jazz the Jackrabbit 2] makes one tortured kid feel better, or makes one administrator or parent intervene in abuse, then it has served its purpose. |
