On paper Shadow of War seems like an across the board improvement, but I haven't been this disappointed by a sequel since Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2.
Orks are no longer hideous monsters with no redeeming values who you can slaughter without guilt. They're now kinda puffy and vaguely ethnic in appearance, and they're lighthearted goofballs. Also they enslave other orks instead of humans now? I no longer get the same kind of joy stabbing my way through armies of them.
The enhanced movement abilities take all the challenge out of travel and consequently remove the magic of SoM's harrowing journeys with procedural adventures forming from unexpected captain encounters at the worst possible moments.
They turned Celebrimbor into an asshole, and Talion into a moron hungry for spider pussy. I despise both of them in this game.
The graphics in general seem to have abandoned the Peter Jackson design and opted instead for bright and cartoony. It almost feels like a videogame adaptation of the Bakshi LoTR film.
Customizing your powers and ork pokemon with elemental powers feels so rote and basic.
Flying on Wyverns spitting blazing trails of fire should be the coolest thing ever, but the controls are godawful.
The stink of microtransactions wafts through the whole game.
On the other hand, the fortress invasions were a nifty idea.
Ultimately a thumbs down from me. I reinstalled Shadow of Mordor and don't even find the experience to be a downgrade. The orks and the setting are so much more immersive in the original. |
