Low glucose alarm: not strictly needed but treated like it's a giant liability for them (it used to be toggle-able), absurdly loud, and finally CGMs are bad at low glucose readings.
But to elaborate, at normal and high ranges, CGMs are pretty accurate. However a lot of the time, they can't tell the difference between 80 and 50, so it goes off for no reason at least once a week. (Sometimes it says my glucose is low, and it really is.) The reason for this inaccuracy is because CGMs aren't monitoring your blood directly. The needle these things use goes in your arm or stomach fat, and monitors "interstitial fluid". They're getting better but they may never be as accurate as a glucometer with traditional finger sticks.
Also, at least during the day, you can feel if you're crashing. So why do I need this alarm while I'm awake? And because of the inaccuracy, I can often feel it before my stupid phone goes off anyway. Oh did I mention that it'll keep going off every 10 minutes or whatever, even though it takes longer than that to bring it back up? YAY LIBRE.
I do like CGMs in general and it's good that they're getting better. Pairing them with a pump is living in the future. I guess this is really another episode in "I can't stand that nobody can develop an app or an interface that doesn't suck shit." |
