It's not on sale at GOG today, but it is at itch.io.
It's like a reverse Sinistar with a dash of Star Raiders. Randomly generated solar systems are coming under attack from genocidal aliens called the Deadeye who mercilessly nuke them from orbit. The colonies all have orbital planetary shield generators, but they've long since fallen into disrepair. You're the one good guy left with a fighter craft and your job is to hunt down resources from asteroid mining while fighting off Deadeye invasion fleets (which are also a good source of resources) and use those resources to repair the orbital shield generators to save the colonies' populations before the deadeye manage to nuke too many. You've got a win-meter of how many surviving colonists you've got under shields verses a lose-meter of how many died. Then you warp to a new sector and repeat under more difficult circumstances.
The ship is fairly zippy in how it controls, but the combat is relatively deliberate in its pacing. Your ammo is limited and you need to make your shots count. Also while there are planetary jump gates you can use, your ship is agonizingly slow moving between planets under its own power, especially when the Deadeye are nuking away. What's worse, all the mineral-rich asteroids orbit the non-inhabited planets so victory is just as much about your positioning on the map as the resources you pick up. The systems are pretty well thought out to make even mundane tasks challenging; when breaking up asteroids there are always one or two pieces that fly away at high speed, glowing, and if you can chase them down they're way more resource-rich than the other slow-moving fragments.
Do not judge the game based on the itch.io demo, it's from a really early-access build and the ships fly way better in the release version.
