I gotta be honest, I am getting less and less hyped for this game by the day.by Mischief Maker 04/21/2023, 8:05am PDT
There are a couple clear improvements over Planetfall I've seen in these preview vids, namely the more straightforward interface for exploiting suburban regions and the fact that additional hero recruitment is linked to city founding, and the ability to capture and ransom defeated heroes.
But other than that it seems like a step back from Planetfall. It sounds like armies are no longer balanced to work as a cohesive unit with tier-1 units staying useful until endgame. The combat seems heavily tilted toward melee again and non-support units no longer seem to have their cool extra abilities like grenades. You can no longer create multiple builds with a single type of unit, creating one type of vanguard trooper for vehicle-killing duty while another specializes in tanking fire; unit enchantments are now applied across the entire army. It honestly seems dumbed down from Planetfall.
And "siege" mechanics where you just sit next to a city for several turns and abstractly delete their walls and defensive buildings have always been a detriment to every fantasy 4X that has them IMO, from Dominions to Eador. Let me have the excitement of tearing down their walls and towers mid-battle, please.
And the big elephant in the room is Spellforce Conquest of Eo. It retains the hex-by-hex dominion fields I preferred from AoW 1-3 over post-Planetfall's maps divided into sectors. And while the map isn't randomly generated, it's way prettier than any beauty shots I've seen of AoW4's random maps.
