| I don't know who this windbag is, but looking at his blog is enjoyable because it's like a glimpse into what Monty Cantsin would be like if he was massively stupider and more self-promoting. Linking prominantly to Chris Crawford's "buy my latest book!" webpage is the first sign that you shouldn't listen to anything he says because he's probably thinks he's quite the game connoisseur. Of course his blog kicks off (scroll to the bottom) when he weighs in on the "Are Games Art?" issue that is on everyone's lips.
This section is my favourite part because he writes up a sizable essay on why the shareware shitass game "Snood", beloved by receptionists everywhere, gets no respect but is still the #9th most played game in the world (according to some research firm. The other top ten games are all free games that ship with Windows and the like. Minesweeper, Free Cell, etc.) It's funny because he doesn't know that Snood is just a rip-off of Taito's massively popular Bust-A-Move / Puzzle Bobble game. Snood, which he holds up as the unsung hero of game design genius, is actually the WORST EXAMPLE of game design if your goal is to hold that job title up to some higher level. Take an established popular game, make it shittier so it's easy to develop, and really small so everyone downloads it and plays at work. |
