I don't want to give up my right to travel across country or even into another one just so I don't get in trouble when it's time to count the bullets. (honestly though I don't know how that works so if I'm wrong it was just a guess)
Also who DOESN'T agree that proper training will lower the number of accidents with ANYTHING?
*sigh* You totally misunderstand. Every male citizen of age has an assault rifle, but they have almost no guncrime compared to the US or even the UK where firearms are outlawed. Why is this? Because the bullets for those rifles come in sealed cases and if anyone gets murdered the first thing the police do is go door-to-door looking to see who is short a bullet. In one fell swoop a Western nation has all but completely eliminated guncrime from their society while making a standing army out of every potential male. Neat, huh? Furthermore the citizens directly vote on topics with petitions recieving more than 70,000 or so signatures for local matters, or twice as many for national ones. Boom, suck it corporate takeover of the democratic process.
Some very smart design in both of those points and it actually fucking works in a physically small country with over seven million people (high density).
And you've proven my point: Socialism CAN'T work without it being practiced by the most willing and cooperative of people. If everyone was like that we wouldn't NEED to give it a fancy name, it would just be that way. It's the same way with communism; both are GREAT on paper, but once you hit the human factor it sinks like things that are designed to sink quickly.
It's a far cry between socialism and putting an end to the fact that the top 0.25% (yes, quarter of 1 percent, not 25%) have more aggregate wealth than the other 99.75% of the American population [Krugman]. That is what I was referring to, and it goes beyond capitalism into the realm of the outright barbaric and sickening. Nobody has any justification for impoverishing their fellow beings to that extent regardless of the economic system they dwell in - it's harmful to the human genotype at large and slaps the darwinist imperative for our particular formation of matter to continue in the face. Accumulation of wealth is one thing - this is wholly another. Putting an end to that level of abuse isn't socialism it's simple fucking sanity.
You keep throwing out socialized medicine in Canada as an example, and yes I agree, but they have what? One TENTH the population of the United States? Hell ANY place is better with fewer people. Look at it over in England where they have more of a proper number. Now I agree that it has plenty of good spots: free handles and ramp installation, money for watching a homebound loved one, smaller bills ect. But the QUALITY is so lacking that people have litterally been driven to the poor house going to private doctors that charge 20 times as much just to get some decent care. Ever see Micheal Moore's "TV Nation"? Yes, the American had to pay the most to get his leg fixed, but the Cuban almost LOST his leg to an infection after they set it. (strictly as a quality of service demo I.E. "You get what you pay for," I'm NOT confusing Socialism with Communism)
England's healthcare represents (as do most things in England) shitty design from the ground up. You might scoff at the parenthetical there, but consider the English society becoming the violent crime capital of the Western world despite outlawing guns. Consider their careless abandonment of privacy in exchange for constant Orwellian surveillance which is not reducing their crime. Consider their abortion of a primary assault rifle for their army which has never worked well and continues to fly apart despite two complete overhaul projects - the latest with oversight by H&K itself. Consider their abandonment to a world where all Internet traffic is required to be logged by each ISP for three months - and the latest pressure to extend this into perpetuity, and their consideration of adopting the EUCD (European DMCA equivalent), reflecting the most grieveus of American sins against the founding principle of the Internet itself - the open exchange of knowledge.
England is a morass of fucking domestic policy excretia and nightmares at its worst, period. Their healthcare system is no different and the ONLY beacon of light on the horizon is the fact that they are attempting to learn from Sweden's clever combination of the best aspects from socialist and capitalist models (choice of providers, more money to hospitals that perform well AND burn through the bed-hoggers, yet maintaining free healthcare for every citizen).
Cuba isn't even worth commenting on - they're every bit as socialist as the United States which is to say not at all. Single-party dictatorship isn't a far cry from corporate-protectionist oligarchy. Their economy as a result of mirroring the Russians' grotesque parody of communism lowers the healthcare system to an unworkable level regardless of how it functions.
GREED is a constant in the world, the free market system is just upfront about it; which leads to competition, which leads to lower prices and better service at those prices, which leads to happy pig mascots and stupid commercials. You CAN'T create a socialist paradise unless you found your own country and don't allow anyone else in, the human element renders that impossible, once you let someone else in competition begins and it slides down hill. The natural competition that is in every human works AGAINST the system instead of bolstering it.
This relies on the assumption that humans MUST behave as animals instead of sentient beings with the choice to intelligently behave as a cooperative society. There's a lot of Scandinavians with a significantly higher average quality of life than the overwhelming bulk of Americans (including you) who can tell you that it doesn't have to be that way in every aspect of society. Sometimes it is useful - it encourages greater performance. But there need to be enforced sanity limits regarding how far that goes (ie: American wealth distribution example from above demonstrates the result of failure in this regard). Hybrid systems of this nature often fail because of grossly incompetent initial design, but a lot of north-western European nations (England excepted) are demonstrating that the end result is worth implementing.
And we both see the same sites and we both saw the same Flash cartoon thing and we both read the same articles. I'm just more practical about things (and a worse speller)
Say we DON'T go in guns blazing (which, you can't deny, gains respect among the people of the mid east) and we just set up a small coup that replaces Saddam. Replace him with who? And again: WE facilitated the uprising that put Saddam in power in the first place. So we replace Saddam with wacky lovable local Maddas. Then what?
America is STILL the evil country that put a puppet government in power to control oil. Damned if we do, damned if we don't. With war we at least earn a bit of respect from the barbarians. Four months later Maddas needs someone to blame for his massive failures and reasons to jack up the prices on oil and BOOM. Same place.
Simple: make sure your Maddas is Karzai Mk. II - the intelligent civilized guy stuck amongst the savages. Even the most anti-American European pseudo-intellectual will admit we did the right thing for the Iraqi people as their lot improves. We win big karma with the rest of the world because in this case there is a clear ethical imperative for regime change. Good world opinion points that we could desperately use right now, no terrorist hotbed, Iraqi people have better lives, cheaper oil prices for as long as Karzai II's memory lasts, no dead American soldiers, no $200 billion spent funding a war only the oil companies want - I'm sorry, what's the downside again?
And yes people may die in the war. It's a WAR. People USUALLY die in wars. It may seem pointless at this point but...oops, wait a minute...yes they just found four MORE chemical warheads. How long before Saddam declares the US responsible for "planting" the bloody warheads in his backyard and he goes on ANOTHER slow speed chase with the U.N. while sweeping warheads under the rug and yelling "Just a miiiinute" in a high-pitched woman voice to the inspectors knocking at the door?
I'm sure his son is already screaming exactly that to the crowds. Saddam and his sons and his cronies need to die or be locked up in the Hague with Milosevic and be replaced with someone like Karzai in Afghanistan. Perfect solution to this mess, and allows us to focus on more important things like figuring out how to take down North Korea without recreating Vietnam.
