oh boy syphilisby laudablepuss 09/23/2023, 5:32pm PDT
I was interested to see this article about how it's likely that syphilis already existed in Europe before Columbus. To the article's credit, it does say that this idea has been around for 20 years, and it's the topic of one of my favorite documentaries. It was uploaded to youtube a year ago but it's clearly a lot older than that. The music and effects are so creepy, it's just fantastic.
But anyway, it appears possible that a kind of syphilis existed in the Old World, basically since forever, and also in the New World a different strain existed since people arrived there in prehistoric times. Both pursued independent careers and only occasionally caused issues in the population, until Columbus arrived and the two strains interacted, and a new more terrible version arose and gave us modern syphilis. (That's as near as I can tell the hypothesis here.)
