Oh my god, old games are unplayable! by Mischief Maker 12/17/2023, 7:39pm PST
So I finally pulled the trigger on two 80s-style GOG games that piqued my interest: Nox Arcanus and Star Fleet 2.0. And holy shit the interface in both these games are fucking cancer!

I've been a huge fan of 80s cRPGs ever since I played Might and Magic 1 & 2, but it must be admitted that I played them on the Sega Genesis, where they didn't have the option of binding every single fucking key on the keyboard.

Why can't Nox Arcanus just have a context menu popup? Why do I need to remember O for open door and S for search and A for attack and a seperate key for how many other actions? Why does it even require 2-3 keystrokes to open a door, why can't it just auto-open when I walk into it?

And Star Fleet is even worse! It's like piloting a spaceship in Word Perfect 5.1!

Playing these games really, really made me appreciate how well Lords of Xulima translated the oldschool difficulty of 80s cRPGs into a modern interface that doesn't require me to hit F9 after every navigational order.

Sorry, ICJ, I know you wanted me to review Nox Archaist, but these terrible 80s control interfaces are a bridge too far.
