Genre conventions :( by Ice Cream Jonsey 12/18/2023, 8:06am PST
Nox is very much inspired by the Origin games Ultima 3, 4 and 5. (Maybe 1 and 2 as well, I don't know.) UI/UX sort of didn't exist back then, so Lord British looked at the "verbs" he wanted to implement and looked at the keys available to him and said, hmm! I guess I can do 26 things, then! Nethack might also be an inspiration. But without speaking for the devs, I can only say that when I saw the keyboard layout for Nox, it felt very good and I knew how to operate it.

Whereas now, of course, you would use a menu and you would not need to know that A is attack. If you bump into a guy in a game with more modern aesthetics, the game may ask if you want to attack or talk or decide for you.

I kind of put it to conventions of the genre. Why do we have to gather resources in RTS games, why not GIVE us the resources and get to the part that is more fun? Well, they are just made that way. Why do we have to pixel hunt in adventure games or have 3 lives in arcade platformers and so on.

The RPG Moonring just came out and I haven't tried specifically what I am about to say: I wonder if its UI is more in tune with what you would like. I will try to try it out today to see.

..... I see that Moonring is not on gog though. I guess that makes sense, it has a 1980s sense of gameplay and style and doesn't really fit in with recent GOG releases like Uncharted.
