They didn't even have a 20 second scene where they looked at a map, made up some excuse about Chicago to Springfield being a giant "fuck off" zone, and decide their only option was to follow along route 70? Or a super winter forced them along a more southern route? Anything?
NOPE. Not even a, "I have a contact I need to rendezvous with." They're just driving and then a hard cut to being hundreds of miles out of their way for no reason. And I can't stress enough how pointless the setting of Kansas City was. There was nothing there for them, the show didn't film at any kind of noteworthy landmarks, and every single character that's introduced winds up dead.
In fact, now that I think about it, that's consistent with the first 5 episodes. Every single character that's introduced that isn't Ellie or Joel winds up dead. I know characters exist to serve the plot, but, holy shit, they only way they could be more on the nose about them being throwaway characters is if they literally showed their corpses being dumped in a trash pile (and there actually is a scene where Joel is dumping a little girl's body into a trash pile after her scene is over).
I could never stand The Last of Us in any form. "Gamer Dad: The Game", reassuring you that it's better the entire world die instead of your adopted kid as long as the brat grows up to suck at guitar.
I'm surprised TLoU 2 didn't include a scene where you go on a mass murder spree to find the one victim with the right blood type to save your kid.
I've never played either game, but I've been meaning to since they were so polarizing. I have a feeling I won't like them, though, since the actual game sounds like the weakest parts of Uncharted. I'm curious how closely the story of the HBO show resembles the game. |
