There was a time, not so long ago, when English men in shorts conquered half the shitholes in the world. Meanwhile, English women sat in gardens drinking tea, covered from head to toe in suffocatingly lacy bondage gear. I remember when treating women's bodies the same as men's bodies WAS feminism. So Lara Croft was bad because she would go abroad to steal from grubby primitives, but she was good because finally a lady was doing it - and a real lady, an upper class one, with a title and everything. Then at some point we realized it was okay for men to wear shorts because our bodies are not inherently sexual objects. Whereas a woman with guns might be able to protect herself from wolves and dinosaurs and pygmies, there is no defense against The Male Gaze. So now Lara Croft is good because, by raiding tombs, she is offering us the learning opportunity to grapple with our colonial history. But she's bad because she's not wearing a burqa while she does it. Is this what you liberals call progress?! I'll hang up and listen.
