Starcrawlers 1 is hands-down one of the best indie cRPGs of all time. Starcrawlers: Chimera is the sequel that just left early access.
So instead of a party-based blobber cRPG, Starcrawlers: Chimera is a single-character roguelike played from a first-person perspective. And instead of being a mix of handcrafted story levels and randomly generated side jobs, the game is one giant randomly generated mission.
My first impression is positive. Starcrawlers 1 had great character classes, but once you'd decided your main party setup you were pretty much locked in a single skill tree from start to finish. Starcrawlers 2 lets your one-man-army choose 7 combined skill trees from whatever mix of main classes and secondary support skills as you want. I'm playing a bomb-crazy soldier in my first run and the scattered bomblets abilities that were pretty wonky in the Phantasy Star-style battles in Starcrawlers 1 are way more effective and intuitive in a 3D space.
Bear in mind this game shares the lack of polish around the edges of the interface that Starcrawlers 1 had. Be prepared to spend some quality time with the options menu before starting.
