I'd update MAME and things would stop working.

Meanwhile if you downloaded "Super Mario brothers.nes" it would keep working forever.

I think the issue is that there were tons and tons of slightly different arcade cabinets out there. So the uber-nerds who had to have every possible ROM for every possible arcade cabinet developed elaborate mechanisms for mixing together a bunch of files at runtime.

Whereas there was only one Nintendo, so people didn't go full retard on the patch file nonsense (except in the case of hacks...)

Of course none of this explains why we need a new verison of Robotron in 2021. I'm sure some comic-book-guy-lookalike can explain that's because of THE DIFFERENT HANDLING OF BANK 0xF in the SOUTH PACIFIC REGION or some shit like that, though.
