Every time you complete a cycle, you get access to the next cycle. First cycle is what the game is balanced around. Later cycles (up to 24) start to both speed up level gain and jack up mob abilities and stats.

the dev says:

"I've heard that for high-mastery players, cycle 6 strikes an ideal balance, so I've been playing at that for a bit, getting killed a lot though haha"
