| Owlcat are all about 3.5e-era min/maxing and the system they've built from the ground up is designed to be abused in that fashion. Everything revolves around Action Points and re-upping a character after they've already had their turn. There are a shitload of ways to do this and sometimes it almost becomes comical like this.
If you give Argent a heavy bolter and give her feats that boost it she can unload an entire magazine, reload, and unload THAT entire magazine in the span of half a turn. Some of the fun in the game is just seeing what obscenely high damage numbers you can make. The story is above-average, though I think it putters out too soon. Plus it's annoying that they spoil the main bad guys through some items in the UI. The Rewards system says you can turn in tokens from Dark Eldar, Chaos, Eldar, and Necron ships. Gee, I wonder who I'm going to face in this game??? The trade system falls flat on its face and doesn't work as advertised in my opinion. In the TTRPG system your wealth was represented as a number between 1 and 100, 1 being a poor-ass serf and 100 being the Emperor of Mankind. You had to roll under your Profit Factor point value to get anything. An Eviscerator for instance (two handed chainsword) was comically easy to get unless you were dirt poor. But if you wanted something like a relic-class Eviscerator then it got a bit more tricky. But in this system you also have to grind WOW reputation with the factions you want to buy from, so even if you have 100 Profit Factor you still can't buy unless you're exalted with the Pandarens or whatever. I didn't see a single Eviscerator until I was 3/4ths of the way through the game. Eventually I got frustrated that my master of at least five worlds couldn't get a decent weapon and used the cheat-mod to just spawn myself equipment. There's also a massive fuck you in Act III where the developers commit a cardinal sin that, funny as hell, was also a poorly received module for the TTRPG itself: You get captured after being put in a no-win cutscene situation and all your shit is taken from you. And if you leave it behind while escaping, you're just completely boned. As usual, you are often put up against comically overwhelming opposition. The vexing thing about this is that they didn't balance the enemies, just mostly gave them the same stats and feats from the TTRPG but repurposed towards their video game-y ends. The problem was that part of the fun with Rogue Trader was that you could usually BUY your way out of such encounters, by purchasing equipment that even Space Marines might have trouble getting their hands on. Because of the poor balancing around item acquisition, that's no longer the case. So it's mostly about your stats and skills. I don't think it's the best Owlcat game (Wrath of the righteous still holds that distinction) but as a fan of the TTRPG, I was happy with it. |
