I wrote this on my Discord, where only a half-dozen folks hang out (on our best day). However, I think the "this will interest at most one of you" also applies to this website, so I'm just gonna cut and paste:
======================
I think there is at most one of you with any potential interest in Frostpunk 2. I'm only a few hours in, so I will give you some thoughts, and then the at-most-one-person can use that to decide if they are interested:
1. It is definitely a sequel in the movie sense, not the videogame sense. Usually, FartBlasters 2 would be an updated/expanded/fancier remake of FartBlasters 1, and if it's any good, you replace the original FartBlasters with the sequel. This is not that. It is a continuation and expansion of the original story, with totally new themes and mechanics, but it is only the same kind of game in the widest sense of "city builder". As such, FP1 is in no way rendered obsolete by the sequel, and continues to stand alone as what it is. FP2 is Aliens to FP's Alien.
2. A little buggy! Nothing game-breaking, but I was surprised to find things not quite working/displaying correctly, after the long wait. I assume they'll be worked out now that it's already made a zillion dollars in the first week, already recouping all of the development costs.
3. Just beautiful beyond measure. I would say if you enjoy spending time in the world of FP, it's a mandatory purchase eventually. Otherwise the shift in focus and mechanics will make or break it for you, but you will still admit it looks great.
I feel like I've barely scratched the surface, but the main differences are:
A. You don't deal with individuals anymore, and don't (with a few exceptions) place individual buildings anymore. You build "districts" which will either provide shelter or some variety of resource. Most of the things you could directly click on the map in Frostpunk are now abstracted. Your population are just numbers now instead of dudes with names walking around the map.
B. You will be building multiple "cities" at the same time, all over the map. You got your main city (New London), but will also found colonies elsewhere which you will build up in the same way, to support the city.
C. A lot more meat to the diplomatic/political end, as there are several distinct factions with wants and desires which you'll be juggling to keep happy and gain favor with (or not.)
So, it's definitely bigger, but not definitely better, since it comes down to which kind of game you prefer. |
