I'd invest in a technology that grants me infinite industrial power at my fingertips.
Fuck, someone should totally do this. Why is no one doing this? The ROI seems decent.
To the tune of hundrends of millions going on billions in research dollars with taxpayer money every year.
Funny thing, though, it won't benefit the kind of people who actually have to pay taxes. It certainly won't benefit those who can't even afford to pay taxes. Rather, the limitless potential good this technology provides will be withheld by the 'enfranchised' populace and the government they control so that the existing social order will be maintained. Rather than bring good to all humans, the goal of our capitalist society is to feed the primary psychosis of the rich - which is the overwhelming need to have others groveling at their feet for crumbs. This technology will not be used to usher in a new era free of want and need entirely, but rather to prop a few up as gods and assuage their infinite egos.
Much like their leaving the WTC out of the New York skyline, and predicting that the proported terrorist destruction of a major US landmark would be responsible for significant erosion of civil liberties, the Deus Ex team also nailed exactly what will happen with this new technology - although I doubt anybody using a 'nanovirus' to wipe out the underclasses, you can bet your ass you and me and that guy over there won't be freed of the need to work ourselves nearly to death for those who control this power.
Yeah yeah blah blah blah SB you don't have a job so you aren't currently working yourself to death. Shove it, I'm going to have to get one in the near future, no two ways around that.
