The state of the game's UI makes Civ 6 launch look like Civ 4.
Things that are currently missing:
- Just everywhere you turn, the looks and functionality of the interface comes off as someone's first mobile game.
- Color coding for buildings/districts on the map, like it did in Civ 6. This is insanely important for adjacency bonuses. Many of the stuff is way smaller than the Civ 6 districts.
- There is now "rough" terrain that limits movement, which is separate from trees or hills. You can have two forest tiles look identical, but oops one is rough terrain and now your movement is over. Currently rough terrain only has teeny tiny brown squiggles you have to zoom and squint to see. It's a mess and you won't bother, resigning yourself to every tile having a random chance of ending your movement.
- The same applies to features. Some tiles have trees showing but do not contain "trees" feature, and vice versa.
- Seriously, there are like a dozen or more different terrain types now, and you'd never guess more than 3 just glancing at the map.
- You do not get any info on enemy units. Like, it won't even tell you their strength. You have to go to the civpedia to look it up. It will not give you a number for health. You have to eyeball health on the tiny healthbar and since that's on the map, of course it's a tiny mess to spot.
- Simple unit actions like fortify or heal now require an extra button press to open up a menu for them. Because of course. But that's okay, you can just use the.........
- There are no hotkeys. None. Holy fucking console-itis, batman! Here we are, a flagship Civ title that does not have hotkeys.
- THERE ARE NO HOTKEYS ON A CIV GAME ON PC.
As to the design changes, can't say I've played enough
