Will two DHCP servers (one per router) on the same network interfere with each other, or will it work ok out-of-the-box and just-plugged-in?
If you don't take the advice of the others in this thread and pick up a 'dumb' hub/switch, you'll definitely want to disable the dhcp abilities of one of the routers.

There's a "toggle" button on the back of the router. What is that? Maybe it depends, but I have a sneaky feeling the buttons are universal.
It's probably turns one of the ports into an uplink so you don't need a crossover cable to connect two like devices. (router <-> router) The ethernet cables you use to connect a pc to the router are straight-throughs and unless you have a specific reason, most home users don't have crossover cables just lying around so the toggle can make your life a bit easier. Or not. Check the website of the vendor that makes it and find out for certain.

Can I have my friend bring a router, plug in a network cable into the new router, and use it like a regular hub, or will there be problems? This is basically what I'm asking.
Probably ..? Depends on what that button does and/or you have a crossover cable. You'll also want to stay away from the ports that you plug into your cable modem since those aren't on the same network as the rest of them. |
