| All this talk about Blue Prince, y'all's missing the greatest puzzle game of the year:
LAB RAT I do not love block-pushers/sokobans by default. Bonfire Peaks is the only one I've ever truly loved. Until... LAB RAT The puzzles are of the kind I love the most -- simple on the surface, but requiring clever/lateral-thinking use of the mechanics to get them to work. Not "here, arrange these 23 boxes in the right way", more "here's two boxes and a laser, good luck." It succeeds marvelously at that, in much the same way Bonfire Peaks does. BUT... where Bonfire Peaks has a aching, wistful, tender beauty to it... LAB RAT is fuckin' hilarious. There are clever surprises around every corner, just when you think you're done giggling. I mean, "SARA" is a blatant GlaDOS-ripoff, but the best GlaDOS-ripoff since GlaDOS, and the game is self-aware enough to ackowledge this fact with a wink and a smile, and one of the funniest surprises I've seen so far, and I'm not even halfway through. I will not spoil anything, but just know that the puzzles are only one aspect of this jewel. It is entertaining, which is not a word I'm used to using with puzzle games. The production quality is off the charts. The voice acting is perfect (and again, hilarious, when it needs to be.) Have I sold you? Have I sold you on... LAB RAT?!?!?!?!?! |
