I take back half the good things I've ever said about by the Resident Evil 1 remake 04/28/2025, 2:54am PDT
I had first played it in college at release, when I jumped onto a game my friends were already 3 hours into. I remember my jaw dropping at the graphics and loving every new change. "This is how remakes should all be!"

Now I'm playing through it from the beginning off Steam. And the beginning is terribly paced.

It now takes forever to get to the first storage chest (waste all the herbs to avoid a soft lock if you pick everything up on the way).

Keys are a pain the ass with their doors spread out worse.

The first storage chest has a limited use door that breaks after a few uses, forcing you into a long pain in the ass detour to get back to the main hall (who thought this was fun?).

2 of your inventory slots are now taken up by items you have to keep on you if you don't want to get fucked by super zombies down the road. This feeds into the key problem where you reach the end of an exploration path and either don't have the key to a locked door, or you have the key but no space to pick up items you find. At that point it's faster just to reload back at the safe room and plan your inventory better, also because in addition to limited save ink ribbons, you now have the above mentioned limited resource door knob in front of your only safe room for the fist 2 hours. I feel like having to write down locked door locations was designated as unacceptable design even in 2002. Didn't Silent Hill solve this in 1999?

I still love all the changes besides that stuff. A lot of neat ways they subvert iconic moments from the original (dear designers: limited use doors are not that)
