It's the best Transformers movie since the animated original. by Mischief Maker 05/03/2025, 11:16am PDT
It's such a weird thing how studios don't let directors cut the trailers to their own movies.

Transformers One is very twee in an MCU kinda way, but it's not ugly and desaturated like a Disney movie. Transformers look like their original 80s toys and not the hideous Bayformers. There are no boring humans doing piss jokes and carrying around age of consent laws on laminated cards. The action scenes are pretty gnarly, not having to be built around confused human actors standing in a sea of green screen, and taking full advantage that since they're all robots they can be torn apart in shockingly gory ways, like a scene where proto-Optimus Prime wraps his legs around a bot then transforms into a truck, ripping the bot in half in the process.

I thought Brian Tyree Henry was fantastic as proto-Megatron. Chris Hemsworth did a fine performance that sold me on the friendship, but the man cannot do Peter Cullen, he just sounds like a guy trying really hard to talk at the absolute bottom of his register. Scarlett Johansson makes zero impression as proto-RC, but it was a thankless *rolls eyes* "you boys..." role as *the girl* so I can't really hold it against her. Keegan-Michael Key is as funny as expected as the-comic-relief-who-will-one-day-be-rendered-permanently-mute. And Steve Buschemi's performance as Starscream made me say, "Wait... Is that Steve Buchemi?"

My only two complaints are:

*SPOILERZ*

1) Even as full Optimus Prime at the end, they just HAD to give him a mouth, with only brief glimpses of his siganture ninja mask during the final battle. Kids understand he's a fucking robot, nobody back in the 80s thought Megatron was more relatable because he had a nose and mouth.

And 2) while Megatron's switch to the dark side made sense, the moment where the split between him and Optimus happens is really stacked in Megatron's favor. The whole movie they've been gorily ripping robots apart limb-from-limb, including comic relief moments, but in the final battle when Megatron's going to kill a robot who is basically a gential-mutilating Hiter figure, Optimus suddenly wants to spare Hitler, even though this Hitler works for their mortal enemies and will totally betray them again. The only thing they do to try and put things against Megatron is he misses one shot at Hitler and sends collateral rubble falling down on fleeing robots.

So it's basically this ending again:

I think an easy fix would be for Megatron to triumphantly kill Hitler alongside Optimus, then turn his cannon on Darkwing, a meanie transformer who constantly bullied them in the beginning, but as far as I could tell wasn't in on Hitler's plan. THEN Optimus jumping in the way of Megatron's shot and sacrificing his life would have made sense.

*END SPOILERZ*

But overall it's a movie I enjoyed more than The Avengers and WAY more than the Bayformers abortions. Stream it sometime, you'll be pleasantly surprised!
