Against the Storm
It's a realtime citybuilder in a postapocalyptic fantasy world where you are building temporary chains of towns in a hostile forest in order to reach the distant seals and restore the world.
The big twist is that it's a citybuilder that plays like the earlygame all the time. Resources are finite so you constantly need to be exploring further and further into the forest to find fresh sources, revealing new dangers along the way. To help, most basic resource gathering buildings are in the form of wheeled carts, so you can reposition them at will.
But all your cities are temporary. They'll act as trading partners for your future cities in the chain and their accomplishments will unlock metagame enhancements, but ultimately whether you reach a seal or not they will be wiped out of existence the next storm cycle.
Slipways
My personal favorite, but you might not consider it a proper citybuilder. You're peacefully colonizing a randomly generated galaxy by forming FTL jumpgate routes between planets to provide the resources necessary for each planet to become successful and eventually prosperous. But normal slipways can't overlap so there's a real spatial puzzle aspect to the game.
On top of connecting planets and upgrading them you'll be building deep space research labs and working your way through a whole random research tree based on the particular coalition of alien races you represent. The correct combination of techs can skyrocket your score! But most importantly once you've got a stable income and tech stream your clients will give you a series of missions to fulfill that have big resource rewards, tech discounts, and will eventually unlock their respective wonders to build.
HUGE PROTIP: The "alt" button highlights all possible connections and their resources when you mouse over a planet, and that essential "show help overlay" function can be remapped to any other keyboard key or mouse button. Once you start using that, you'll find this game has a brilliantly elegant interface that lets you see at a glance in this web of interconnected planets which planet needs what and from where.
I have not gotten around to playing Shadows of Forbidden Gods yet, sorry. |
