Every Day We Fight- Edge of Tomorrow XCOM by one potential gem 8=====D 06/16/2025, 12:25pm PDT

Maybe this will finally be the XCOM clone they don't fuck up? Premise is straight up Edge of Tomorrow. Aliens invade, cut off a city, freeze every human except your 3 person resistance group. Every time you die, loop back in the day. Every time you kill a special alien, loop back in the day.

It takes the one (and only) good feature of Phoenix Point where hit RNG is replaced by whatever travel path your bullets can fly through and hit the target instead of cover. They improve on it to by injecting just the smallest amount of FPS reflexes. Enemies will continue to move in slo mo as you react from overwatch, plus recoil. You can even hold your breath for 4 action points and steady your aim!

Another big change: overwatch is now essentially divided between movement and shooting. Everyone gets a "react point" that is expended if you go into overwatch. Anyone who gets attacked during the alien turn can use their unexpended react point to run a short distance, which can be life saving when it comes to dodging a grenade or rotating to new cover if you get caught at a bad angle. So overwatch is no longer the default thing to do every turn. Decide between tunnel vision focusing on a spot to shoot, or remain alert to dodge some shit. The aliens get this too! They can start scrambling for cover when you open up on them in slo mo first person. They also run from grenades, so you're throwing more to scatter them and flush them out of cover.

Turn based combat only kicks it when enemies are alerted to you. It's real time wandering around the city, or when you're sneaking into ambush position using simplified mechanics from the Commandos series. This is pulled off SO much better than when XCOM 2 tried it.

There is a base you return to. So far no indication there's any resource management or construction going on there.

If there's one thing that annoyed me, it was the narrative. Every obstacle is some bad adventure game design of impassible waist high objects blocking you. See an important glowing thing a dozen yards away? Too bad there's a couple cars parked in front of it. We cannot possible climb over these couple of packing crates, better go find explosives to blow a hole through the wall instead. You spend the first hour trying to get to a research center to find a scientist who knows all the answers, only to discover there are alien crystals forming SHOULDER high obstacles into the building!

The only possible way forward is to shatter the crystals, which can only be done with a high frequency alien mining drill thing. Do we just pick one up? No. Do we steal one? No. A character pipes up that there's a different building in the city that might contain info on starting to put together a blueprint to begin building our own mining drill. This isn't sending Jeff Goldblum to disable the invincible alien shield. It's setting up a Gordian Knot solution to a parody of video game invisible walls.

I still want to play the whole game and you're not playing XCOM for the plot, but geez.
