The Sporting News was just pimping ol' Jake Delhomme as a viable option for a team looking for a QB who is good and relatively inexpensive. Dallas, maybe, but I think Parcells will make a run for Plummer. I've always liked Delhomme, I remember the one start he made a few years back when both of the Billy Joes were hurt. Didn't he win that game? I just remember his enthusiasm and the way the players seemed to pep up around him, like Browns players around Holcombe this season.
He's good enough to step in and start for at least Dallas, Carolina or Cincy. Probably a couple others, too. He definitely should have started our last two, what with Brooks going under the knife right after the season ended. Holcombe'd be the better choice for someone trying to land a new, youngish QB -- that guy was just sick out there this year -- but I think he's still under contract with the Browns, unlike Jake.
In Ditka's last year, Delhomme beat Dallas in week sixteen (well, the d-line holding Emmitt to 8 yards helped) and then was at the helm for the 45-17 pasting Carolina laid on the Saints. The Panthers were in one of those deals where they had an outside shot to make the playoffs if they scored enough points. Ditka was about as prepared for that as he would have been if Martians had landed before kickoff and just started mentally microwaving the crowd. Speaking of which, Ditka has thrown his hat into the ring for the Lions job. When you consider that Matt Millen probably had a mild stroke when it was revealed that Harrington's favorite video game was Ms. Pac Man, such knowledge would cause Ditka's head, the minute it entered it, to explode like that guy in the KKK sketch at the end of the Dave Chapelle Show two weeks ago.
