The old lady. by pinback 11/02/2025, 7:55am PST
It's funny, I commented (to myself) that it was Magnolia, except with children instead of frogs. I read a review this morning where the creator noted Magnolia specifically as an inspiration. So, bonus point for that.

Negative reviews are hard to find, but the one I finally found echoed my sentiments perfectly. Mainly:

1. The movie spends a LOOOONG time on character development that has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Did you know that the cop was a recovering alcoholic? With a nagging wife? And he also worked for his wife's dad in the police force, which caused a lot of intra-familial strife and stress? And had a former romantic connection to the teacher lady? You did? Yes you did, because the movie took great pains to make sure you knew all of that, even though none of that had anything to do with anything at all. I hope you like learning MORE stuff about the characters that have nothing to do with anything, because we've still got an hour of movie left, and still a long time before we find out anything about what's going on!

2. Once you find out about the crazy old lady and her powers, the movie spends no time delving into it and just says, yep, crazy old lady who can control people with a voodoo stick. Ah, never mind all that, here's a bunch of kids running crazy all over the town! MOVIE OVER!

It set up a lot of interesting stuff and ignored all of it in favor of meaningly character development and setting up the one amazing five-minute scene at the end.

Big deal.
