I have been doing research for an article I hope to present to Caltrops early in 2026, and in doing so, I have had some questions out for genre and platform experts. Flack - who has taken to providing touching slice of life articles for our front page, seriously, go check 'em out - counts the Commodore 64 game "Paradroid" as his favorite game. This matters to me. The man sits in front of a Commodore 64 once a week and plays a Commodore 64 game. The Commodore 64 is the best-selling home computer of all-time. Jerry provided valuable insight on racing games.

Mischief Maker directed me to the "shoot 'em up" called Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi.

Google Translate tells me that translated, that title means, "Determination: Bonds, Hell, Swords." Those are the things I am worried about in my life right now. Am I leading a life that will direct my spirit to hell? Whatever became of Avondre Jones, former USC basketball player, convicted of beating and robbing someone with a samurai sword in 1998? Should I stop investing in bonds?

Ketsui is an arcade game, and that means it is probably playable in MAME. I have so many ROM packs, that I did a quick search for the name of the zip file likely on my computer. The MAME team still steadfastly - with determination hangs onto an 8.3 naming scheme from the various first releases of MAME that Avondre Jones should have, and could have, destroyed with a samurai sword back in the day - no jury would convict him of that. So a quick search of ketsui.zip brought up nothing. JESUS CHRIST everything involving MAME is a trillion times tougher than it needs to be. A couple searches indicated that they call it ket.zip and that was on my system, yes. Christ.

I give credit to Ketsui because I can tell what is going on when I play. There is what appears to be tanks laid out in a way that you can destroy, and they look like the Tiananmen Square incident photo tanks. What a great rivalry, the Japanese and the Chinese! Ketsui gives me options to fire - this is a fine shoot 'em up, even I can tell. I think it's better than Raiden IV, the game of this type I have the most experience with.

A lot of vertical shooters that I have spent time with are, uh - well, they are horizontal shooters, sometimes. The Turbo Duo has a port of Zero Wings like that. And it's outer space. I could probably program a black screen to show up on a Turbo Duo, given a week. I like the art of the city below for Ketsui, there is some craftsmanship here that sometimes - in my experience - the genre takes for granted and doesn't bother with. It looks like I am fighting over a Japanese city.

The Nintendo DS version claims to be the same game, but it starts and seems quite different. I will stick with the arcade version for now. Thank you, Mischief Maker!
