FoK reminded me, I did grab some pedals. Here are some thoughts.
Generation Loss II is great, it is as advertised, I'll probably keep it forever.
I have owned a Empress Reverb for a while now. There was a stretch of the pandemic where corporations hadn't jacked all their prices yet, but I was working from home and had gotten a raise and I bought some toys. I bought this one before I really needed it or knew what it was for. It's a staple of my recording area now though; everything goes through it.
So then, no pedals for a while, but I bought a very cheap noise reduction pedal from a local place in Rochester when I was back home in May, a "Donner Noise Killer." I had asked various AI tools if there was something that could kill noise and they all said nope, can't be done, stop asking, you're dumb. And it was sitting there and worked correctly. I was going to make it part of my chain because my Deckard's Dream has a lot of noise. Well, in moving stuff around I have a different cable coming out of it and going to my mixer.... and it doesn't produce noise any more. This is the second or third time I have been fucked by a shitty 1/4" cable. I am going to be particular about these from now on. I haven't seen any difference in MIDI cables or eurorack patch cables, but the 1/4 line out ones suck if they are cheap.
Next up was a "Mini RAT Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal LM308 chip based on ProCo RAT" pedal. It says "Black Rat" on it. This has the nicest distortion of what I have so far, but it was $29 maybe? On eBay? I get that there are sweeter sounds to be had, but I wanted to get some cheap pedals to try them out and this started it. I don't really have a guitar sound I love through synthesizers, the best one is probably just a sample played with MIDI that was built-in through Ableton, so if I do want to have that sound, I can get something close on a synth, put it through this pedal and be done.
There was a AZOR Pedal AP-308 on eBay for $19 or so. When getting food at a restaurant is $65, a $19 pedal might as well be couch change. This one is also a distortion pedal. It is fine, I will do a song with it.
And lastly, I just grabbed a "ISET Digital Reverb Guitar Pedal with 9 Modes" called Reverb Baby off reverb.com. I made an offer and got it for $17 shipped. So I am not that angry that it does not appear to have a dramatic effect on what I put through it. I wonder if has to do with how these are made for guitars and I do not have a guitar. But I liked that it has a setting for flange, I want to try "flange" and flangers out.
I don't recall seeing a ton of other sub $30 pedals out there so this might be the end of it. |
